Ohio Sox started as a Fall Tournament Program, created by Cory Smith and Phil Stotter. With talented players, supportive families, and a shared dedication to growth, it has now grown into a year-round developmental program. The emphasis will always be on development, preparation, and putting players first.
Spring/Summer 2026, and 2025 Fall players will be evaluated as well.

At Ohio Sox, our mission is to create a high-performance baseball environment where athletes grow through disciplined training, position-specific development, and a team-first mindset. We’re here to build more than just players; we’re building competitors, leaders, and teammates who are prepared for every level of the game.
We believe player development comes from intelligent training and quality competition, not just playing more games. That’s why our program focuses on:
- Fundamentals First
- Game IQ & Strategy
- Effort & Attitude
- Pro-Style Development
- Position-Specific Work
- Pro-Style Defensive Drills
- Hitting for Hard-Hit Rate & Barrel Control
- Pitch Velocity & Throwing Development
- Baseball IQ Situational Strategy
-Arm Care
-Strength & Conditioning
-Speed & Agility
One of our top priorities is building a complete, balanced roster. That means developing strength across all areas of the field, not just loading up on bats or arms. We emphasize proper development and playing time for pitchers, catchers, infielders, and outfielders alike.
We believe that the best teams are built on depth, versatility, and players who understand their roles. We’re committed to giving every athlete the tools and coaching to succeed at their position.
We fully support athletes who play multiple sports. Our schedule is built to enhance, not interrupt, your child’s growth across disciplines. We’re happy to work with each family on finding the right balance. The Fall program is optional, and players can be included as minimally as desired.
Cost Structure
We are proud to offer a competitive and affordable experience thanks to our non-profit model. While we do incur expenses such as tournament fees, umpire costs, insurance, and uniforms, we’re committed to keeping player costs manageable.
2025 Fall Program:
Estimated cost: $200–$500
Final cost will depend on player availability and the number of tournaments we enter. This is an optional development-focused season designed to provide additional reps and flexibility for multi-sport athletes.
2026 Spring/Summer Program:
Estimated cost: $1,000–$1,200
This includes uniforms, tournament entry fees, insurance, and other team-related expenses. Fundraising opportunities will be available to help offset player fees, support team equipment needs, or assist with travel costs.
Facility
Ohio Sox does not operate out of a single, dedicated training facility. Instead, this approach allows us to keep costs lower and stay flexible based on the needs of our players. As an open travel program, we adapt our training locations to match the geography and resources of our roster. We currently have access to multiple facilities throughout the Akron, Cuyahoga Falls, Stow, and Hudson areas, along with additional options along the Route 8 corridor. This flexible model allows us to meet families where they are and keep development convenient and affordable.
We believe the most successful teams work with families, not just players. That’s why we’ll be setting time aside to meet with families, hear your goals, and understand what you want from your child’s baseball experience-both now and in the future.
Some families are already looking ahead to high school, varsity, and college baseball.
Our program is designed to support those goals. With decades of combined coaching, adapting, and learning from different programs, Cory and Phil bring a foundation built to last.
Phil Stotter works at the highest level of professional baseball with a focus on player development. He is a nationally recognized sports science expert and baseball coach with over 25 years of experience in sports and performance biomechanics. Phil has worked for and consulted with five Major League Baseball organizations, and he is a frequent speaker on the integration of biomechanics and coaching. Known for bridging the gap between sports science and practical coaching, Phil brings a unique blend of research, technology, and on-field application. His expertise has helped elevate the performance of athletes at all levels, including MLB standout Elly De La Cruz.
In addition to his pro-level work, Phil trains players individually to prepare for high school and college baseball. His ability to combine advanced technology with practical skill development makes him a key asset in each athlete’s growth and readiness for the next level of play.
We are proud to announce that additional training for the Ohio Sox will be led by Jeff Waggoner, a highly respected baseball coach with decades of experience at the collegiate level. Coach Waggoner was named the 2016 Conference USA Head Coach of the Year and previously earned the 2008 All-Pavlovich Team Coach of the Year honor. Over his coaching career, he has helped produce 28 All-Conference USA selections and developed 23 players who were selected in the MLB Amateur Draft. His résumé includes time as head coach at Marshall University and assistant coaching roles at programs like NC State and Kent State. Waggoner is known for building successful programs and preparing athletes for the next level, both on and off the field. His leadership and expertise will be a tremendous asset to our athletes as they continue to grow and compete at a high level.

Cory Smith is the founder of the Ohio Sox, a Substance Abuse Counselor, Firefighter, and former Airman with a strong foundation in psychology and youth development. He’s coached for years and understands both the game and the kids who play it. After seeing how travel baseball can sometimes lose sight of development, Cory set out to build a program that keeps fundamentals, character, and preparation at the center. His approach blends structure, consistent coaching, and a genuine focus on helping players grow on and off the field. With a background in team leadership and behavioral health, he brings a deeper understanding of how young athletes learn, stay motivated, and gain confidence. The Ohio Sox is built around that vision and strengthened by trusted partners like Phil Stotter, whose knowledge helps elevate the entire experience.
